Board Candidates – We will be electing a new board to govern Swing Dance Calgary.  If you are interested, please feel free to chat with us ahead of time about some of the details. We will be posting more information here, shortly.

Class Schedule:

10:00 – 11:00am: Find Your Feet, open floor time

If you need a little extra time to warm up in the morning, this is your chance!  Come get your bal-shuffle started and get ready for the day.

11:00 – 12:30pm: Polish and Push It with Glenn & Nicole

Since basic patterns get boring fast, this class will use some of the basic steps to make musicality make sense. Requirements include having two feet and the ability to count to two, three, four and eight……But don’t be fooled – this will be a challenging class by the end.
Prerequisites: Should be familiar with closed basic, come around, throwout, lollies, crossovers, crabwalks and paddles. Review the 4 “Basics” videos on the Basement Balboa Sessions Facebook group if uncertain.

12:45 – 1:45pm: Looking Good, Feeling Good with Darryl & Kim

Balboa can be a small and simple dance, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do fancy moves too. We’ll show you how to take some of your Balboa staples and spice them up!
Prerequisites: Come around, throw out and lollies. Prior knowledge of looking and/or feeling good is recommended, but not required.

1:45 – 2:30pm: Lunch

2:30 – 3:30pm: To Bal-Finity and Beyond with Amber & Tom

There are an infinite amount of ways you can move in Bal; we’ll be showing you some cool ideas to get you started!
Prerequisites: Must know come around, throwout, lollies and crossovers. Behind-the-back throwout recommended for more advanced moves, but not required.

3:30 – 5:00pm: Balboa Potluck Open Session with All Instructors

Evening Dance: Come enjoy an evening of dancing Balboa with our local gypsy jazz band, The Fedora Club!  Beginner lesson at 8:15pm.  General Admission at 9:00pm.  $17 in advance, or $20 at the door.

Cost: $60 for the full day, including the evening dance.  $15 per individual class.

Class Schedule:

11:00 – 12:00 =  Get in, Swing Out! with Jonathan and Katie

Learn the basics of Lindy Hop footwork: 8 count step, triple step, connection techniques, etc…  to reach the extra-ordinary feeling of a swing out!

12:15 – 1:15 = Swivels and Bits with Curtis and Tara

Intermediate to advanced level. Ability to swing out is a must.
Want awesome swivels? Want to know how Curtis can look that cool by barely doing anything? We will be teaching Follows how to get their “swivel” on, and finish the rest of the class playing with musicality – creating the “he goes-she goes” type dancing. This is a fun, playful style that is easier than it looks, and guaranteed to occasionally have awesome results!

Lunch Break! = A short lunch break with dancing videos

A couple classic black and whites to watch while chowing down on your paper bag lunch.

2:15 – 3:15 = Solo Dancing inspired by Josephine Baker with Tim

Are you ready for an hour of making faces, moving your hips in ways you didn’t think possible and making shadowy awesome shapes? This class will help to introduce everyone to some of what made Josephine Baker so amazing and to help everyone realize that you don’t have to be serious to be awesome!

3:30 – 5:00 = Open practice time

Bring things that you’re working on and test it out on the Sunalta floors.  Instructors will be around to help answer questions and other people will be around to try things out with.

Cost: $35 for all three classes and the open practice time OR $12 per class as a drop-in rate

Swing Dance Calgary brings you the 4th Annual Cabaret! Promising to be another evening of amazing local entertainment followed by delightful dancing, this is an event not to be missed.

This is your opportunity to put together a wonderful 2 minute (maximum) routine displaying your performance talent. It can be silly, it can be serious, it can be dancing, it can be playing an instrument… use your imagination! Perform and let us be amazed and proud of the wonderful talent that our scene has.

Theme:
1920’s era. This is your chance to dress up in your favourite 1920’s flapper dress or suit.

Dancing:
There will be a dance following the performances. Plan to stick around, enjoy the atmosphere, and enjoy the music.

Volunteer:
We will be looking for many volunteers including tasks leading up to the event and the day of. If you’re interested in helping out please talk to Heather, Curtis, Jo, Matthew or just start asking around. This will be a true community building event so we’re hoping to get as many people involved as possible.
